Steeltex Tire Failure and Bridgestone Tire Tread Separation
In May and June of 2006, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began an investigation of Steeltex tires manufactured by the Bridgestone/Firestone Corporation, the world’s second largest tire manufacturer. The review by U.S. auto safety regulators covers R4S, R4SII and A/T Steeltex tires produced from 1999 to 2005. The agency said the review was prompted by claims that 57 deaths and 161 injuries were caused by tire-tread separations.
As the result of a similar, but unrelated, NHTSA review conducted in 2004, Bridgestone/Firestone replaced 487,000 Steeltex tires used on Ford Excursion SUVs manufactured from 2000 through 2002 and some 2003 models as well. Steeltex tires have been included as standard equipment on Ford’s Explorer SUV and E-Series and F-Series trucks and on General Motors Corp. trucks such as the Chevy Suburban and Silverado.
