Goodyear RV Tire Recall
Goodyear RV Tire Recall and Tread Separation Defects
Several models of motor homes and RVs have been recalled over the past decade to replace Goodyear G 159 tires that do not perform properly on Class A motor homes and pose a danger of accidents as a result of tire failure. Tire failure, in the form of tread separation or a tire blowout, can result in loss of vehicle control and in serious personal injury, death and/or vehicle damage.
Goodyear Tire Recalls for RVs
In the last decade there have been recalls from two major RV manufacturers and one “Product Service Bulletin” to replace Goodyear G 159 tires because of the inadequate load margin. It was not until 2006 that Goodyear publicly stated that G159 tires were not designed for RVs and has since replaced them with a more robust tire.
In June 1999, Fleetwood notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency that it was recalling 17 models of Class-A American Heritage motor homes because of inadequate total front tire weight capacity. The company replaced the 275/70R22.5 Goodyear G159s with a larger Michelin XZA 275/80R22.5. Fleetwood expanded its drive to remove the G 159 from its products with a much larger recall in October 1999, and recalled 275/70R22.5 Goodyear G159 tires on some 3,400 Class-A models made from 1996 to 2000 after four tire failure accidents involving two fatalities occurred between September 15, 1998 and September 9, 1999.
The Monaco Coach Corporation was the second manufacturer to recall the G159 Goodyear tires. In June 2002, in conjunction with Goodyear, Monaco voluntarily recalled the G159 from 1999, 2000 and some 2001 Windsor motor homes and offered to replace their G159 275/70R22.5 tires with 295/80R22.5 LR H, G391 tires.
