Airbag Failures
Airbag Failures In Vehicle Accidents
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, front airbags saved over 25,782 people between 1987 and 2008. Airbags are safety devices designed to work with seat belts to minimize injuries in vehicle accidents. Airbags prevent an occupant’s upper body or head from hitting the vehicle’s interior during a crash. Both frontal and side-impact air bags are designed to deploy in moderate to severe crashes.
However, from 1990 to 2001 alone, NHTSA reported 215 deaths caused by air bags inflating in low-severity crashes. These deaths include 72 drivers; 10 adult passengers; 111 children between the ages of 1 and 11; and 22 infants. Additionally, some car victims may also face severe injuries or death as a result of numerous types of defects in airbag safety systems.
